The myth that aesthetics and physical appearance are directly proportional to one’s social status and happiness is perpetuated through media, yet one website, Fit and Feminist, aims to de-bunk many of the misconceptions surrounding weight, food, appearance, and self-esteem. In this article by Fit and Feminist blogger Caitlin, her main argument resides with the fact that we cannot outwit our body’s natural processes for the sake of having thinner thighs or a leaner “fill-in-the-blank” body part. Humans are meant to have muscle and fat, and consume calories to live. Pretty common sense information, but with the media bombarding us with ideas that we CAN change our natural biological selves through calorie restriction and body-spot toning, individuals (eating disordered or not) have lost focus of the pure, honest science of our bodies. Thankfully, we CAN debunk these media driven myths, and honor our bodies through good nutrition, adequate sleep, and healthy interpersonal relationships. So ignore the magazines, websites and TV shows spouting “thin thighs” as the key to happiness–forge the way for you and future generations to embrace a truly honest and healthy body image.
