The Gift of Acceptance

The seasons are changing–the air is becoming crisper, Christmas decorations are starting to take shape on front lawns and tress, and the promise of a new year with new resolutions looms on the horizon.  With all of the holiday festivities quickly approaching, it’s easy to get caught up in magazine covers crying, “Lose Weight for Your Holiday Party!”, or “How to Not Gain This Season”.

In this article titled, “When Clothes Don’t Fit”, blogger Kelly describes how negative body image (“Ew, I hate my arms!”) is not only detrimental to one’s self esteem, but also fuels society’s harsh mores females are coerced into believing (“I must fit into this dress”, “I shouldn’t have flabby arms.”).  As Christmas and New Years draws near, make a resolution to love YOUR body the way it was made–give that gift of self-love and acceptance to yourself.

Power in Body Acceptance

Sometimes it’s in thoughtful reflection–ruminating about past mistakes, brooding over previous actions–when we can truly unearth and accept our present day existence. In Z Zoccolante’s article, “Stop Freaking Out About Cellulite”, the writer details how she challenged her mind-set, and as a result grew from a past riddled with a negative body image to one that accepted and embraced every part of her being. Body acceptance can be difficult to attain in our aesthetically driven society, but Zoccolante demonstrates that over time a positive outlook on life and a mind “free” from society’s ideals CAN lead to a life of true joy.

Mistakes in Eating Disorder Treatment

Discovering your child or loved one has an eating disorder can be a stressful and anxiety-ridden time. Finding a proficient treatment team to help your loved one recover is of utmost importance. Sarah Ravin PhD describes in this article, 10 Common Mistakes in Eating Disorder Treatment, common mistakes family and friends make during the course of eating disorder treatment.

Although the number of eating disorder cases are on the rise, the amount of education on HOW to FULLY recover from this type of illness are rare. This article is one of many informative pieces that provides tremendous insight into the treatment of this insidious disease, and sheds light on how to best help loved ones recover.

Fat-Talk: Stop it NOW!

The media bombards us with images of expertly photo-shopped models, making the public believe this type of “beauty” is attainable and necessary to be accepted and happy. Friends bemoan to one another about the size of their thighs, arms, and stomachs, pinching excess skin and wishing for a smaller body. The idea that “fat” equals ugliness and being “thin” equates with contentment and acceptance pervades our society–and with this ideal comes the disturbing fact that the majority of individuals participate in “fat-talk” (the objectification and discussion of a person’s size). “Fat-talk” is often times glossed over as harmless, yet the effects these words have on an individual’s outlook leaves long lasting consequences. In this article by Rebecca Howden, the writer addresses the negative effects of “fat-talk” on an individual’s psyche and worldview, and urges readers to be pro-active in creating a “fat-talk” free society.

What can we do? Take a stand and stop “fat-talk” by telling as many people as you can that they are worth more than just their bodies.
