Eating Disorder Awareness Week: Fat Talk

February 24 to March 2 is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

We may all know of someone struggling with disordered eating, whether anorexia, bulimia, or EDNOS. Since there are a great number of individuals struggling with this disorder, the question becomes, what can we do to enlighten others about these illnesses? One topic brought up in the following YouTube clip produced by Tri Delta in 2008 is to end “fat” talk. The public unknowingly engages in these conversations (“Do I look big in this?”, “Wow, she has a big butt!”, “No, I can’t go out because I feel too big.”), so much so that it becomes almost “normal” to overhear a crowd of teenage girls talking in this manner. What then can you do to end “fat” talk? Take a stand! Refuse to engage in the conversation, and be the shining light of reason, strength and sanity in the midst of all this “talk”. Watch the YouTube clip, and hopefully you too will be challenged to stand up to “fat” talk.
