Self Esteem and Food

“Because when we teach people that they have value, that their feelings matter and they have a beauty inside them worth respecting, they begin to believe it.”


This line from Brittany Gibbon’s blog article “Fat Shaming Doesn’t Work — Here’s Why” encompasses the idea that when individuals discover they are worthwhile and important, then they feel GOOD about themselves. Many disordered eating patients have difficulty finding self-acceptance, and will externalize that feeling of invalidation through restrictive or compulsive eating.
